Someone on Quora asked: why haven’t you told anyone you’re transgender? So I tried answering, from past experience
When I was figuring my stuff out I could not tell anyone, it took me a long time to find resources and even then I could not tell any one other than fellow trans folk, because I was scared. I was so scared that I was going to be rejected, once I started coming out to family I realized this fear so I was scared to come out to my extended family. Most of my extended family accepts me. I was rightfully scared of being rejected by some of my friends, but I have made new ones. I was rightfully scared of being rejected by some of my co-workers. I was rightfully scared of being rejected by people in public. I was rightfully scared of being rejected by other people involved with work. Was it worth it? I will firmly say YES, after looking past the rejection I am proud to say that I am me now. Would I hide it now? I cannot. If someone asks me about it and I am in a safe place I answer truthfully, if I am in an unsafe enviroment I try to avoid those questions i.e. Sexually Harrased. On hook up websites that is the first thing I mention, for my safety.
The validity of my answer maybe lacking because I am now so far out that I have told the world; I have been recognized for my activism all over Canada and some of the States. I have been recognized for my passion from many places around the world. I have been on the front page of the local newspaper, Trans Activist Calls For Province To Cover More Surgeries For Those Suffering From Gender Dysphoria. I have been on the local news, Transgender inmates to be housed based on identity. I have been on the CBC web page a few times;Giving ‘new life’: Sask. doctors advocate for streamlining, improving transgender health care | CBC News, and Second Chance Prom launches 2-week Pride Festival in Saskatoon | CBC News. I have written letters to every single MLA in Saskatchewan (as of late 2017) and every single MP in Canada (as of early 2018). I have written letters to many different news outlets and reporters. I have written letters to many government agencies both Provincially and Nationally. I have also written letters to many companies. Some of these letters can be found on my blog, Reann’s Story
